Kindness Finds a Dog

Uncategorized No Comments »

The willingness of a community jumping to his aid touched a neighbor in need. Ricky Walters of Overbrook, Pennsylvania, had just adopted a dog named Sid when he bolted out of the house and down the alley. As Walters chased the speedy whippet mix, neighbor children spread the word. Despite the dark of night and a threatening hailstorm, soon a small army of kind people with dog treats, leashes and friendly dogs was out searching. They finally located Sid, and two women coaxed him out of hiding. Without the instant help of his neighbors, Walters may never have found his frightened new dog and brought him home to safety.

How it feels to do something nice for someone

General No Comments »

Since starting this site I’ve given out quite a number of coins to strangers while doing something “nice” for them.  In most cases what I’ve done have been pretty “small” acts of kindness … buying a meal, giving a gift card at a store, etc.

Even these relatively small acts, though, get me excited.  My heart rate rises and I’m actually quite nervous when handing the coin off.  I think this is because 1. I am honestly quite excited to do something nice, 2. I’m not sure how the person is going to react, and 3. I’m already thinking about whether or not the person will go to the site and “track” the coin.

I think it’s hard to figure out whether or not someone is going to go to the site after receiving the coin and actually track it.  Are they worried someone (Big Brother?) is going to use their personal information to try to sell them something or steal their identity?  Or will they get just as excited about the idea, write a note about how they got the coin and then try to think of a way to pass it on?

I guess we don’t have enough coins in circulation yet to see if the idea will catch on, but I’m excited about the prospects of people doing nice things for others …

Scoring a goal with kindness

Sometimes just by listening you can learn of a need and fill it. Gloria Sacknoff was watching her daughter play high school soccer in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, when she overheard parents discussing the middle school team’s lack of funding. She told her daughter, who suggested that high school team not purchase the commemorative t-shirts they had been planning to celebrate their winning season. Instead, they bought the younger soccer team $600 worth of much needed safety equipment.

Kindness Solves a Mystery

Several strangers helped Washington resident Bill Knudsen learn the story of his birth father’s death 65 years ago. Knudsen journeyed to an American cemetery in France this spring to visit the grave of his father, a U.S. Army Air Force solder who died during World War II. The Seattle Times printed Knudsen’s travel story on May 18th, and in two weeks the responding e-mails and phone calls have allowed Knudsen to discover more than he ever thought possible about his birth father. A French policeman has even asked if he may adopt the grave and decorate it each Memorial Day.

Preventing Hearing Loss for Troops

Uncategorized No Comments »

A Chicago audiologist is using her professional skills to prevent injuries in American troops. Hearing loss is the top disability of American soldiers returning from war zones. When Ronna Fisher learned this, she began donating ear plugs to soldiers departing for Iraq and Afghanistan. The custom-fit, high-tech earplugs allow the soldier to hear normal sounds while filtering out dangerous noises, such as bomb blasts. Her kindness will hopefully prevent tinnitus, a painful condition of ringing in the ears that 70,000 returned soldiers are now suffering from.

A Random Act of Gas Kindness

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

An anonymous man handed out money at a Brandon, Florida, gas station today. He drove away before anyone could ask why he was giving out cash. Drivers theorized that the man may have just wanted to cheer people up and remind them that there is good in the world. At the current price of gas, residents are hoping he’ll turn up again.

The Power of One Volunteer

Ivagene Wheeler has shown her small city of Pekin, Illinois, the power of one volunteer. Pekin Township named Wheeler Volunteer of the Year for her thousands of hours of service. She helps in many ways around town, from comforting families of patients in the hospital’s surgical waiting room, to running the library’s used book sale or simply talking to isolated persons as she delivers food. Wheeler fell into each job as she discovered help was needed and has remained a reliable, hardworking volunteer. It’s a legacy from her parents, she says, who just helped people as a way of life.

Boys Make Quilts for Soldiers

Uncategorized No Comments »

It’s inspiring when kindness motivates a receiver to pass on the warm feeling. Teens at Boys’ Haven in Beaumont, Texas, were touched by the quilts volunteers made for them. The boys asked if they could give quilts to wounded American soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since most had never sewn before, the boys challenged themselves to learn a new skill so they could show war heroes how much they appreciated their service.
